In this episode, we share a recording of CFRC’s live broadcast of the 2024 Queen’s University Tricolour Awards Ceremony where Niki Boytchuk Hale, Kyla Gibson, Tara Rezvan, and Meena Waseem were inducted into the Tricolour Society. The event took place at the University Club on April 5th and was broadcasted locally on CFRC 101.9 FM and streamed globally via cfrc.ca.

Outgoing Queen’s Rector Owen Crawford-Lem has issued an invitation to the Tricolour Awards and induction gala to be held at the University Club on April 5th. CFRC will also be live broadcasting this historic occasion for listeners near and far on its airwaves locally at 101.9 FM in Kingston and via webstream at CFRC.ca. In this episode, we present an exclusive interview with Calder Bryson, Chief Electoral Officer for the Alma Mater Society undertaken on February 2nd 2024. Bryson discusses electoral processes for the AMS Executive Team following the January 31st withdrawal of a team member from JNN, the potential impacts for student engagement with the voting process for the Rector positions and fee-seeking clubs on the referendum ballot, and the importance of slates and neutrality for the AMS in the election cycles.

Clubs & Community Groups

In this extended episode of Campus Beat we feature interviews with community and student clubs seeking new fees or renewing existing ones during this year’s AMS and SGPS Elections and Referenda occuring February 6th and 7th. Several clubs did not respond to our requests for interview. The AMS Elections Team furnished us with available nomination package pitches which were read by CFRC team members in lieu of an interview.

At the 32 minute mark, listeners will also enjoy the SGPS All Candidates Debate which occurred virtually on January 31st 2024, content of which was furnished to us by the SGPS Elections Team. Full video of proceedings is available on the SGPS website and their social media.

Then at the 96 minute mark, we are joined by Allison Mei of the Queen’s AMS No Vote 2024 campaign against Team JNN who we interviewed earlier this week and content from which was broadcasted on CFRC 101.9 FM on January 30th and podcasted here.

Since the time of recording our interviews with the No Vote 2024 campaign and Team JNN, CFRC has learned that Nico Brasset of Team JNN has withdrawn from the AMS executive slate. While we await word from the AMS elections team on next steps related to the executive election as there is now no qualified slate of candidates to run for executive office, we were able to catch up with Nico Brasset formerly of Team JNN for an exclusive interview responding to questions about the No Campaign and his withdrawal from the AMS executive slate. Our discussion with Nico starts at the 100 minute mark.

Finally, at the 113 minute mark, we caught up with Queen’s Rector Candidates Leo Yang and Niki Boytchuk Hale who joined us to shed light on their leadership experience, their goals for office, and the importance of voting in AMS and SGPS Elections.

In this episode of Campus Beat, we welcome this year’s Alma Mater Society Executive Team candidates now running for election. Team JNN is the only slated team running in the 2024 AMS elections. Jason Kim, Noah Mawji and Nicolas Brasset also known as Nico join us to discuss their experience and their vision for AMS governance for 2024-2025. Following our discussion with Team JNN, we throw it over to CFRC’s Campus News Liaison Erika Singh for an interview with folks from Union Gallery, the student led art gallery at Stauffer Library about Union Gallery’s upcoming annual fundraiser now renamed Side by Side.

In this episode, we cover campus news headlines and sit down with Dr. Kathleen Rühland , lead author and senior research scientist with the Queen’s Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Lab (PEARL), whose team recently published a groundbreaking article entitled “Arctic Warming Drives Striking Twenty-First Century Ecosystem Shifts in Great Slave Lake” in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. In our discussion we learn more about the the algal communities and their place in the ecosystem, Great Slave Lake as a primary field research site, and implications of the PEARL team’s research in the context of climate change.
