Breaking Bad News to Your Children

  • Summary

  • Taking care of a patient in the house is very difficult. Now imagine having to share the bad news with your kids that their favorite person may not live for long. As young parents, we always question our beliefs and thoughts. I would suggest you visit the feeling you experienced when someone you loved dearly was sick and in the last few days of their life, but you were not told about it. You were unaware of the time that you had with this person. The anger you felt towards that person and your parents for hiding the truth from you. You sit down and think how different you would have spent those last few days with that massi you really adored, how you would have kissed and hugged her a lot more if you were aware, these are exactly the feelings your kids will go through in case you rob them of the decision to make for themselves.

In my experience, no matter how difficult the situation you teach your kids that speaking about it helps in solving problems. You show them that even you as a parent their Super Hero can feel sad can cry, and can be upset because of the helplessness around you. You teach them how to regulate emotions, by the example of how you deal with them. You guide them by giving them direction in the confusion that they may have in how to deal with the emotions that they are feeling. That is the best thing you can do for your kids' emotional well-being.
