• BLAZE STREET MUSIC PRESENTS - MUSIC OF A LIFETIME EPISODE #40 - THE LEGACY MUSIC OF QUINCY JONES
    Nov 10 2024

ALOHA! PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING 👍🏾 I APPRECIATE YOU!

On 3 November, 2024 - the world, the universe lost a legend. The incomparable Quincy Delite Jones, Jr. He was also known to his closest friends simply as 'Q'. It is really hard to put into words the accomplishments of Mr. Quincy Jones. He passed away at the age of 91 and of his 91 years, more that 70 of those years were spent in the world of music. From his first love during his very young teenage years, Quincy would quickly develop such an incredible talent for learning everything and anything musical. There is soo much to his story, his legacy and his LEGEND that its hard to put it all into words or a simple podcast episode here. So I won't.

Here is a link to a good source of information on his life, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincy_Jones.

Quincy Jones is my musical hero. I've been a true fan of his life and his music since I was about 10, 11 years old. In 1976 I listened to one of his albums titled "I Heard That", a double album released that year on A&M records that included mostly tracks of his greatest hits at the time and a few new songs as well. I was 14 years old. And from then on, I was hooked. I wanted to be like him. Understand music like he did, work with some of the greatest artists in music - just like he did. I wanted to be a "genius" like him because everyone already knew, that Quincy Jones was a genius.

During my growing years, his music was all over the radio in songs like "Sanford & Son" theme, "Mellow Madness", "KIller Joe", and many others. But lest not forget; it was his songs with other artists that would really get the world's attention. Such artists as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn...The Brothers Johnson....Rufus featuring Chaka Khan...Michael Jackson, George Benson, Donna Summer and the list goes on and on and on.

I've done three other episodes on my podcast about Quincy Jones because he's larger than life in my musical heart and soul. The last episode I did was in July, 2023, when I did an episode to celebrate the 37th release from my 50th greatest list - Quincy Jones "Sounds...and Stuff Like That," which was released in 1978.
You see, on my 50th greatest lists or records and albums of my life, Quincy Jones has three releases. Three.

This is part one of my salute to Q. In this episode, Im playing some of my favorite songs from his albums. Quincy Jones had several albums where he was the headliner but he put together a great, no UNBELIEVABLE AND TALENTED supporting cast of musicians, writers, and vocalists to achieve his artistic vision. All of the songs here on the episode from albums that bear his name. In the next episode I'll put together my the favorite tracks that he did FOR OTHER ARTISTS...it will showcase Quincy Jones the producer.

Quincy Jones may have left the studio. But there's no doubt that his spirit will forever linger on. Enjoy!

ALOHA! PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING 👍🏾 I APPRECIATE YOU!

BLAZE STREET MUSIC PRESENTS MUSIC OF A LIFETIME - EPISODE #39 - A SALUTE TO UK SOUL, PT. 3

HERE WITH THE FINAL EPISODE OF MY SERIES TITLED, “SALUTE TO UK SOUL”, WHERE I’M SHARING WITH YOU MY LOVE OF WHAT’S CALLED “BRITISH SOUL”, OR “UK SOUL.” SO, MAYBE UR ASKING…WHAT IS UK SOUL AND WHY IS THERE EVEN A THING CALLED UK SOUL? AND THATS A GOOD QUESTION. FOR SURE, WHAT THE WORLD MAY OR MAY NOT KNOW AS UK SOUL, WE AS MUSIC LOVERS DEFINITELY KNOW THAT THIS GENRE OF MUSIC EXISTS AND IT’S STILL VERY RELEVANT TODAY, AND I SAY THIS BECAUSE OF WHAT BRITISH/UK SOUL MUSIC DID DURING THE 80’S, 90’S AND INTO THE EARLY 2000’S. IT WOULD TAKE ME LOTS OF TIME TO GIVE THE WHOLE HISTORY OF THIS MUSIC BECAUSE THE ROOTS OF IT WERE BIRTHED DURING THE ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC THAT CAME TO AMERICA WITH THE BEATLES AND THE ROLLING STONES IN THE 50’S, 60’S AND 70’S, AND WITH THAT, IT WAS AMERICAN MUSIC, IN PARTICULAR AMERICAN JAZZ AND SOUL MUSIC, THAT CROSSED OVER TO EUROPE AFTER WORLD WAR II, SPECIFICALLY DURING THE MID 50’S INTO THE 1960’S. HERE’S WHAT I CAN TELL YOU: AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON BRITISH POPULAR MUSIC, AS I SAID SINCE THE 1960’S AND THE CLEAR GENRE OF WHAT’S CALLED UK SOUL MUSIC REALLY FORMED IN THE 80S, WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH ACTS AS LOOSE ENDS, FIVE STAR, SADE, SIMPLY RED, AND LISA STANSFIELD, JUST TO NAME A FEW. SO DURING THE NEXT FEW EPISODES I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME OF THESE ARTISTS WHO OVER THE YEARS HAVE BECOME SOME OF MY FAVES AS WELL.

I’LL BE PLAYING MUSIC BY SADE, LOOSE ENDS, IMAGINATION…DELEGATION…AVERAGE WHITE BAND, DELEGATION, FIVE STAR….HEATWAVE? YEAH, HEATWAVE, WHO DURING THEIR HEYDAY YEARS OF THE MID TO LATE 1970’S HAD A KEYBOARDIST AND SONGWRITER IN THEIR GROUP, A GUY BY THE NAME OF ROD TEMPERTON…YES, THAT’S RIGHT! ROD TEMPERTON. A MAN THAT THE LEGENDARY PRODUCER (I CALL HIM THE GREATEST PRODUCER OF ALL TIME), MR. QUINCY JONES, CALLED ROD TEMPERTON ONE OF, IF NOT, THE GREATEST SONGWRITER IN POP MUSIC HISTORY, AS HE PENNED SUCH CLASSICS AS “ROCK WITH YOU” AND “THRILLER” BY MICHAEL JACKSON, “GIVE ME THE NIGHT” BY GEORGE BENSON, “BABY COME TO ME”, BY PATTI AUSTIN & JAMES INGRAM, JUST TO NAME A FEW. MUSIC BY FIVE STAR, LISA STANSFIELD, SIMPLY RED, MICA PARIS, INCOGNITO…OMAR…LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THERE ARE MANY, MANY MORE ARTISTS FROM THEN AND EVEN NOW, ALL HAILING FROM THE UK, WHO ARE BELOVED BY MILLIONS FOR THE

UNIQUE ‘SOUL’, R&B AND GROOVE LEANINGS, THE FOUNDATIONS OF THEIR MUSIC THAT I CAN SAY WAS BORN IN THE FOUNDATIONS OF AMERICAN SOUL MUSIC. YET, UK SOUL IS VERY UNIQUE, IT IS IT’S VERY, VERY OWN CLASSIC SOUND, AND THAT’S WHAT I LOVE ABOUT IT.

  • BSM MUSIC OF A LIFETIME PODCAST - EPISODE #33 - A TRIBE CALLED QUEST 'THE LOW END THEORY' & HIP-HOP OF 1991
    Jul 4 2024

ALOHA! PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING 👍🏾 I APPRECIATE YOU!

The year is 1991. I’m stationed in Skaggs Island, California…and skkkrrrrtttt…hold up, let me tell you the full story. Okay. In 1989, I left Fort Meade Md. and got orders to NSGA Skaggs Island, Ca. a US Navy site located about 30 minutes north of San Francisco, and 15 minutes west of Vallejo, California. I had made it California and I was verrryy happy. See, back in 1980, I had gone to boot camp in San Diego, and being in California during those short nine weeks left an very strong impression on my life and all since that time, I’d always wanted to get back. Just so happened, in 1989 I was able to secure orders to get back to Cali. I get the orders, and oh my God, I ended living in Marin County CA in a place called Novato. And let me tell you - I loved it. Fast forward to 1991 - It’s 1991. I’ve been selected to attend a special Navy program where I attend college full time for two years to get my degree and let say to you that life is great. It’s during this time that hip-hop is becoming something that I’m getting obsessed about.

    • A Tribe Called Quest.
      • Formed in 1985; from Queens, NY; debuted in 1990 with the release of ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and Paths of Rhythm’
      • Just selected recently as 2024 members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
      • Members: Jarobi, Phife Dawg (tragically passed away in 2016), Q Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Within four years, the group released four albums that are now considered some of the best music not only in hip-hop, but in all of American music.

FOR ME, HEARING A LOW END THEORY IN 1991 WAS A WATERSHED EVENT. EARLIER THAT YEAR I HAD JUST BEGUN A VERY SPECIAL PROGRAM WHILE SERVING ON ACTIVE DUTY IN THE NAVY, A SPECIAL DUTY THAT ALLOWED ME TO ATTEND COLLEGE FULL TIME FOR TWO YEARS UNTIL I GOT MY ASSOCIATES DEGREE. THERE I WAS ON THE CAMPUS OF THE COLLEGE OF MARIN …AKA MARIN COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE, GOING TO SCHOOL AND LITTLE DID I KNOW WAS HOW A TRIBE CALLED QUEST….THE X CLAN…PUBLIC ENEMY…LL COOL J…NWA, POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS AND SO MANY MORE HIP-HOP ACTS WERE GOING TO AFFECT NOT ONLY THAT TIME OF MY LIFE, BUT THE REST OF MY LIFE. IN THIS SETT IM GOING TO BE PLAYING SOME OF MY FAVE HIP-HOP FROM THAT TIME OF MY LIFE. EACH SONG RINGS WITH A SPECIAL MEANING FOR ME, CAUSE THAT TOUR IN THE NAVY WAS FILLED WITH SOME INTERESTING MEMORIES….OPERATION DESERT STORM…THE LOMA PRIETA EARTHQUAKE…THE RODNEY KING POLICE BEATING AND THEN AFTER THE ACQUITTAL, THE RIOTS…THE CHICAGO BULLS DEFEATING THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS FOR THE THEIR FIRST OF 6 NBA TITLES (NOW DONT FORGET, IM ORIGINALLY FROM NORTH CAROLINA AND MJ IS MY MAIN MAN!.....I WAS IN CALIFORNIA DURING ALL OF THESE EVENTS. SO SIT BACK, GET YOUR FAVORITE SIP, OR ROLL UP A SPLIFF…LET’S GO BACK TO NO DOUBT, PROBABLY DURING THE BEGINNING OF ONE OF THE GOLDEN AGES OF HIP-HOP WITH ME!
