BeanTalk Episode 002: Olamide Zacchaeus Beauty is in the struggle, ugliness is in the success. The cool thing about this episode is that Coach Liebs and Olamide Zacchaeus (OZ) have parallel come-up stories. OZ went from an unbelievable college career to undrafted free agent to now starting Z for the Falcons. “The whole journey is crazy.” From Plainfield to South Jersey to St. Joe’s Prep - his journey, his recruiting story -- his first high school touchdown (on a kick-off return against Don Bosco - Coach Liebs coached there). How he got to Virginia and his family and coach’s role in the process. Liebs: “My point is, an unbelievable college career, a lot of production yet you go undrafted tell me about going to the pros. OZ: Senior year 93 catches, 1058 yards, I was not invited to any combines or Senior Bowls and I said to myself here I go again, out of the mud. Going into a room with Mo, Julio, Ridley, Gage, Hardy, Blake and Gray was perfect. I knew my avenue on that team was special teams. I’m gonna show out because of my effort. It is effort and having a plan. Don’t lose that mentality, that’s what separates you.They talk honestly about recruiting. Going somewhere you are valued is so much more important than the name. Go to school somewhere they appreciate you. “Go somewhere you can put it on film, you gotta be willing to bet on yourself. Leave a legacy.” They talk about what drives them, ‘I always wanted to honor the sacrifices people made for me’. Coach Liebs tells the story of how he became a coach. “Man, I can chase that feeling forever.” Liebs: There came a moment in time where I had to decide, “Do I want to be the most popular coach on Instagram or the greatest coach who ever lived?” If you don’t play better on Sundays I don’t deserve to be recognized. OZ: My college coach, Coach Hagans told me, “People have a plan for success. But they don’t have a plan when they achieve success.” Don’t forget what got you here. ‘Transitioning from fitting in to standing out’ - Drake. “That's what it’s been for me, especially coming in undrafted. That is the cycle of football. People expect more out of me.” You've been here before. It’s challenging yourself and setting the example. What is acceptable in everything you do? Liebs: There’s a quote from high school I’ll never forget. “There are two great tragedies in life, losing your heart’s desire and the other is gaining it.” What do you dream beyond that?
