SO WHO ARE RUN DMC? Run-DMC is originally born and raised in Hollis, Queens, New York City, formed in 1983 by Joseph Simmons (aka “RUN”), Darryl McDaniels (aka DMC) , and Jason Mizell (AKA JAM MASTER JAY). Run-DMC is regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture and especially one of the most famous hip hop acts of the 1980s. One of the most important things about Run DMC pioneered music, is that they took hardcore rap from a hardcore underground street sensation to to a pop-cuture leading status. And it should be noted that during the time that Run DMC debuted on Profile Records in 1984, that right across town in New York City, Run or Joseph Simmons brother, Russell, was co-founding what would become one of the most influential labels in the history of music, in Def Jam Recordings, along with his college friend, Rick Rubin. One thing of note that I have to mention, is tragically, Jam Master Jay, a founding member of Run DMC, and a pioneering DJ at the birth and early stages of hip hop, was tragically murdered in his Queens NY music studio in 2002. The case had remained unsolved until 2020, when two suspects were arrested, and earlier this year, 2024, both suspects were convicted in his murder. Along with Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, and Public Enemy, RUN DMC pioneered new-school hip hop music and helped usher in the golden age of hip hop, which is still debated to this day as the best era of hip hop ever! The group was among the first to highlight the importance of the MC and DJ relationship. In 2009, Run-DMC became the second hip hop group (after Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, 2007) to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2016, the group received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
