Arthur Ashe and a Game Beyond the Baseline

  • Summary

  • Arthur, a young Black boy in Richmond, Virginia, dreams of playing tennis despite being excluded from white-only country clubs. He discovers a love for the sport at a public park, where he is determined to train despite the racism and segregation that permeates society. With the help of Mr. Randolph, the park's unofficial custodian, and Dr. Ronald Charity, a Black physician who recognizes his potential, Arthur becomes an exceptional tennis player and earns a place on the prestigious UCLA tennis program. Despite facing racism and challenges to his legitimacy, Arthur becomes the first Black member of the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1963, achieving his dream and inspiring others to defy limitations.
