Academia Into Song: Another Damn Camino Podcast

By: Matt Krause
  • Summary

  • In 1989, Dr. Henry Jones Jr., a.k.a. Indiana Jones, told his class that 70% of all archeology is done in the library. But in 2008, he said to one of his students, "If you want to be a good archeologist, you've gotta get out of the library." What made Dr. Jones change his mind? I am reminded of this pastor in a church in Santa Monica who said, "At some point, you have to close your Bible, because you don't need more information; you need imagination." I didn't fully grasp this until I was walking the Camino de Santiago. I was playing with anagrams in my journal and discovered that if you rearranged the letters in CAMINO DE SANTIAGO, they spelled ACADEMIA INTO SONG. That's right; it's another damn Camino podcast. Only we aren't going to sit around waxing about the Camino like a bunch of wannabe shamans sitting in a drum circle without a drum. We're going to be talking about culture, movies, music, personal history, and all the cool stuff we encounter every day... and how the Camino changes the way we interact with it. Buckle up, buttercups, because I have things to say.

  • Ep. 006 - The Camino means nothing until we step upon it
    Jul 23 2024

In this episode, we look at the serendipitous events that occur on the Camino and what they mean... to the individual peregrino. Is serendipity a thing? Or is it mere coincidence to which we attach meaning? Carrying that argument further, is the spiritual experience of the Camino authentic or based on what we imagine the Camino to be?

  • Ep. 005 - Peaceful Warrior (2006) and the quality of redemption
    Jul 16 2024

In this episode, we look at a film from 2006, directed by a man with a monstrous past who appears to be trying to do better. Because of his crimes, it is difficult to get behind this film, but if we listen without prejudice, who knows what might happen?

  • Ep. 004 - The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and putting our attention on The Good Stuff
    Jul 9 2024

'The Last Temptation of Christ' was divisive and controversial when it came out in 1988. It seems to be a sign of the times that if we don't have something to fight about, we go out and find something. But the Camino is different. The Camino transforms divisiveness - at least that was my experience. Take in the controversy, then listen for the solution. That is all.
