French and Indian War: British forces capture Fort Duquesne from French control. Later, Fort Pitt will be built nearby and grow into modern Pittsburgh. Battle of Solway Moss: An English army defeats a much larger Scottish force near the River Esk in Dumfries and Galloway. Abel Tasman becomes the first European to discover the island Van Diemen's Land (later renamed Tasmania).
