This week I chat to Dr Omara Naseem, Psychologist & Eating Disorder SpecialistWe talk about what an eating disorder looks like and how they’re diagnosed. We also discuss the BBC Documentary that you may recognise Omara from Freddie Flintoff: Living with Bulimia, my reaction to it as someone who lived with bulimia for a long time, Omara’s thoughts on it as well as why this programme was so important despite some of the backlash online. We also talk about the prevalence of disordered eating in wider society including in the fitness industry where “cheat days” and fasting are encouraged in men and women. The barriers to seeking help for those from ethnic minorities as well as some of the recent inquests into the services and why it is something to be welcomed as it will help the NHS to get more investment into eating disorder services.Over the last year we’ve all had to adapt in many ways and treatment has also had to do so too In order to keep up with the demand that covid has put on us; feelings of food scarcity, pressures and relapsing due to lack of control and emotional upheaval. We talk about what you can do if you’re concerned about your own mental health or eating patterns and how you can support others who you are starting to worry about.
