#4: Is Medical Cannabis Legal? — Celebrity Ambassadors, Stigma, History of Perception, Current [2023] Laws and Regulations for Australia

  • Summary

  • In this episode, Gianni, James and Charlie dive into the legalities and stigma behind medical cannabis in Australia. They explore the historical context, cultural attitudes, political climate, public health concerns, and media representation that have contributed to the long-standing perception that cannabis is a dangerous drug. They discuss how the perception of cannabis has changed over time, the legalisation in Australia in 2017, overseas influences, and current laws around driving under the influence of THC. It's a really informative episode that sheds light on a topic that's still widely misunderstood in Australia.

In this episode, we welcome back our resident expert guest, Gianni Del Rosario-Makridis, who is a plant enthusiast and a final year Ph.D. candidate in the genetics of medicinal cannabis at La Trobe University. Gianni's work is dedicated to discovering new and exciting therapies for treatments by unlocking the therapeutic benefits of plants. He graduated with first class honours in botany in 2017 and has been researching cannabis trichome genetics full-time as a Ph.D. candidate since then. In addition to being an academic teaching plant-based molecular biology to undergraduates, Gianni is also a scientific consultant in the cannabis industry with experience as a cultivator for one of Australia's largest cannabis companies. He brings a wealth of expertise in both the science and commercial sides of medical cannabis to our show.
