3: LTATM Ep3 Musicians in the Military

  • Summary

  • Welcome to Episode 3 of Let's Talk About The Music, where we explore the unique experiences of musicians in the military. Throughout our discussion we'll also touch on various aspects of music.
Before we dive in, here are some interesting facts:
    • As of 2020, the World Bank reported there were 27,406,000 (twenty-seven million, four hundred six thousand) armed forces personnel worldwide, including active duty and paramilitary forces.
    • In 2024, Global Firepower’s Military Strength Ranking listed the USA as number 1 and Australia as number 16.
    • The United States Armed Forces has approximately 6,500 military musicians across 130 units. These military bands serve various roles, from supporting bases and boosting soldier morale to acting as musical ambassadors in peacetime.
Now, Let Me Introduce My Guest Co-hosts:

Here in the PNW, we know Austin and Grace from the alternative emo band Prickly Paranoia. Austin plays the base while his wife Grace (whom he met in the military) plays lead guitar and sings. They perform while also serving as active duty military personnel! Austin is a Veteran Specialist in the National Guard and Grace is an Army Captain, Logistics Branch.

Tony Schmidt is from the Aussie-based band Gen2, currently signed with Golden Robot Records. Established in 2016 in Melbourne, Australia, guitarist and vocalist Tony wished to found a band that mingled the best of old and new music. He has family in the military as well, but he prefers to keep their journey private. We respect his choice and appreciate his willingness to share his own experiences.
