3-1. The Family of 'Imran (Al-'Imran آلِ ﻋِﻤْرَانَ ) verses 1 to 34

  • Summary

  • This episode marks the beginning of Surah Ali-'Imran, a Medinian surah which has 200 verses. The first 34 verses' overarching theme is the reiteration that Allah is the source of divine revelation. Having a belief in Allah as the only Lord and Islam as His only accepted religion. Reminders that scriptures are a source of guidance. In this episode, we are reminded of Allah's Might, the differences between precise and elusive verses, prayers of the knowledgeable, punishment of the disbelievers, Allah's help at the battle of Badr, temporary pleasure, everlasting delight, worshipping of only One God and to follow one path, that is Islam. Also contained in these 34 verses, are mentions of the people who are rebellious and those who reject Allah's judgement and infinite power. In this episode, we are warned of taking disbelievers as guardians unless as a precaution against their tyranny. Before we end, the Quran reminds us of Allah's Infinite Knowledge, the accountability for Good and Evil, of obedience to Allah and His messenger and who are truly the blessed people.

Sypnosis from The Clear Quran book by Dr. Mustafa Khattab:

This Medinian surah takes its name from the Family of ’Imran mentioned in verse 33. Like the previous surah, it reiterates the fact that Allah is the source of divine revelation and affirms the belief in Allah as the only Lord and Islam as His only accepted religion. The story of the birth of Mary, John the Baptist, and Jesus is mentioned, along with a challenge to the Christian perception of Jesus (‫)ﷺ‬. The surah also touches on early battles against the Meccan pagans with emphasis on the lessons to be drawn from the Muslims’ defeat at the Battle of Uhud, which took place in 3 A.H./625 C.E. The virtue of being mindful of Allah is highlighted at the end of this surah and the beginning of the next one.
