14. Expectations as a Foundation for Coaching with Steve Barkley

  • Summary

  • When supporting PLCs as an instructional coach, we want to set the expectation that we are there to provide expertise and background but that it is the teachers who take ownership and leadership of the PLC. As coaches, we are not members of PLCs but rather we can help teachers begin to truly work as a team with all students’ best interests in mind.

Steve Barkley is the Chief Learning Officer and Executive Vice-President of PLS 3rd Learning. He is internationally recognized for his ability to facilitate change through his teaching and coaching and is skilled in guiding systems and teams through the process of continuous improvement with coaching, mentoring, and professional learning communities.

In this episode, Steve is discussing what a PLC is and a coach’s role in the PLC, how whole schools can work as a PLC to support student needs, and why teachers need to make a minimum of a 3 year commitment to students.
