    Las epístolas de Juan son diferentes a las otras epístolas generales. 


    La primera es una homilía doctrinal, mientras que las otras dos son principalmente cartas privadas a individuos. 


    La primera epístola fue escrita para corregir herejías y afirmar las cualidades de la vida cristiana. 


    Segunda Juan, dirigida probablemente a una mujer cristiana, enfatiza la verdad del evangelio de Cristo y advierte en contra de los falsos maestros. 


    La tercera epístola, dirigida a Gayo, alaba a este por la buena manera en que trata a sus hermanos cristianos. 


    Aunque muchos han sugerido que esas cartas fueron escritas por otra persona y no el apóstol Juan, hay una firme evidencia de que él fue el autor.
