(STEP) | EP23 | Nurturing Early Childcare Teachers: Kai Ming's Vocational Training Program - STEP
    Jul 16 2024

If you're interested in becoming a substitute teacher or enjoy taking care of young children, this episode is perfect for you! We will introduce Kai Ming's STEP vocational training program, which specializes in training substitute teachers for children aged 0-5. Sabrina, Kai Ming's HR Director, explains a major advantage of the program: no early childhood education (ECE) credits are required to apply, significantly lowering the entry barrier. You can learn early childcare education knowledge and gain experience while earning a salary and receiving benefits, preparing you to become a competent substitute teacher.

Additionally, Anny, a substitute teacher graduated from the STEP program, shares her journey from registration and training to final job placement, encouraging new immigrants to try this training program. In addition, San Francisco passed Proposition C in 2018, making childcare services more accessible for low- and middle-income families and improving protections and benefits for childcare workers. The city government plans to raise the minimum hourly wage for childcare workers to $28 by 2025, attracting more people to enter the childcare industry.

If you are interested in joining the STEP program, you can sign up online here. If you need services in Chinese or Spanish, you can call 415-594-7400. CAA’s economic justice program team is also happy to assist you with the entire application process, including writing a resume, completing application form, and translation services. • 第二十二集|呼籲社區支持, 改善三藩市華埠的網絡落後問題 | EP22 | Calling for Community Support to Improve Internet Access Issues in San Francisco's Chinatown
    Apr 26 2024

In today's world, having a reliable and affordable internet connection is no longer a luxury but a necessity for students, young parents, and even the elders. According to a research published by CAA, almost half of SF Chinatown households do not have an internet broadband subscription and for those who do, the internet is slow and unreliable. In this episode, SRO resident Zoey will discuss how the lack of reliable internet affects her and her children's daily life and mental health. Additionally, we have invited Calvin Yan, a political aide to Supervisor Aaron Peskin, to discuss how SF City Government is intervening and providing support. The "Fiber to Housing" program is one successful example. Five affordable housing buildings in Chinatown participated in the installation project, bringing faster and more stable internet services to tenants. In short, we need community support to urge the City Government, internet providers, and property owners to work together and ensure that all communities have access to reliable, high-speed broadband.

We need your support! You can use our call to action tool to let our local officials know that addressing digital equity for Chinatown and other communities of color is important to you. You can click here to sign the petition.

EP21 | Chasing Dreams & A Better Life: Chinese Migrants at the Southern Border
    Mar 28 2024

Since last year, over 24,000 Chinese migrants have made the journey into the US through Mexico. With limited capacity to assist Chinese migrants in-language, humanitarian organizations in San Diego reached out to CAA to request support for the influx of new arrivals. This request led to our second trip to San Diego this March after our initial visit in December 2023. This time, resources are even scarcer due to the closure of the San Diego Migrant Welcome Center, leaving migrants stranded at a remote Transit Center, where reuniting with their families proves to be a daunting challenge. From March 12 to 14, our CAA team provided direct assistance to approximately 400 migrants each day. We also spoke to several Chinese migrants, delving into their motivations for undertaking perilous journeys to the US, even at the risk of their own lives. As immigrants ourselves, we listen to their stories with empathy, aiming to offer a deeper understanding beyond the mainstream media narrative. Discover the dreams and aspirations that drive these courageous individuals, as they strive for a better life and chase the American dream, just like many of us.

Episode 19|Youth Safety & Mental Health Support
    Aug 24 2023
Together with our community partners, Chinese for Affirmative Action hosted a town hall in March this year to address the recent spike in school safety incidents. This episode further explored the mental health and academic challenges among immigrant children in the post-covid world. You will first hear from Mr Li, a family liaison at MLK Middle School. Leveraging his extensive experiences working with Chinese-speaking immigrant families, he shed lights on the devastating impact of covid on students’ academic performance and emotional growth. This impact is exacerbated by students’ frequent engagement with social media and other online activities. Subsequently, Ah Yee shared her lived experiences as an immigrant parent, delving into the common barriers that immigrant children and their parents, who often spoke limited English, encountered while navigating the school system. Through sharing her journey, Ah Yee hoped to encourage all immigrant parents to actively participate in their children’s education and to create a safer and supportive environment for immigrant youth to thrive.

Episode 18|Defend SF Sanctuary!
    Jun 6 2023
With a focus on San Francisco's Sanctuary Ordinance, this episode looks into its vital role in upholding the values of equality and inclusion and protecting our immigrant communities from Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) racial profiling and abuse of power since 1989. In recent years, our City’s sanctuary policies have come under attack with an attempt to recycle the war on drugs and scapegoating immigrants for the drug crisis. In this episode, you will hear from Angela Chan, Chief of Policy at the SF Public Defender's Office, who shared her experience as a staff attorney at the Asian Law Caucus and witnessed hundreds of immigrant youth being handed over to ICE in 2008. This experience drove her to form the Free SF Coalition, which has successfully pushed for the passing of three local laws to strengthen sanctuary policies. We then speak with Anny, an outreach specialist at CAA, to learn about how the attack on Sanctuary Ordinance has instilled fear among Chinese immigrant communities and her participation in a grassroots movement to defend sanctuary.

Despite having more than 120,000 Asian youth eligible for DACA status, many are discouraged to come forward and apply for the program. This is in part due to misunderstanding and prejudice against undocumented immigrants among our communities. Our guest today is Yudy, an immigrant from Hong Kong who came to the US alone at age 17 for high school and became undocumented. From overcoming barriers and risk of deportation to pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse, Yudy shares her courageous journey of being undocumented for the past 20 years. Her extraordinary story re-defines what it means to be American and serves to uplift immigrant community voices.
