さるがもっている柿のたねを交換しました。
かにがたねをうえると……
かにの子どもはみごとにかたきをうちました。
めでたしめでたし。
の、その後の話。
仇を取った蟹の子らは、その後警官に捕まり投獄。
主犯の蟹は死刑、臼や蜂らは無期徒刑。これは事実である。
猿蟹合戦は「因果応報」の話だが、復讐は善ではない。
蟹の家族はその後どうなったのか。
妻は貧困のためか、性状のためか、売笑婦に。
長男は株屋の番頭か何かになった。
次男は小説家になった。
三男は、蟹よりほかにはなれなかった。
そんな三男が横ばいに歩いていると、おにぎりが落ちていた。
すると高い木の梢に猿が一匹――
芥川は最後にこう言います。
「語を天下の読者に寄す。君たちもたいてい蟹なんですよ」
