しばしばフランス革命は、「自由主義」「社会主義」「保守主義」の三つの思想を生みだしたといわれるが、「保守主義」を欧州に残して、「自由主義」はアメリカへ、「社会主義」はソ連へ引き継がれたと見なしてよいだろう。この両国はその後それらのイデオロギーを世界に普及させることを目指すのだが、そうした志向の根底には『旧約聖書』の終末論が潜んでいた。
