ぼくは一生けんめいにあとを追った。その少年の歩きかたは、早くなったり、おそくなったりする。時どき、人ごみのあいだをすり抜けたりする。だから、すこしも目をはなせなかったんだ。
それでも、自分がどこにいるのかまるでわからないのもいやなので、まわりを時どきちらちらと見てはいた。しかし、それが変なのさ。道ばたにあったコーラの赤い看板、それの色がうすくなっているような感じ。花屋の花も、みんな色がうすれているようだ。理髪店の看板も、やはり色がうすくなっている。（「１ ある日のこと」）
