日本でショートショートが親しまれるようになったのは、1957年（昭和32年）に星新一がデビューしてからであるが、山川方夫（まさお）は、星新一、都筑道夫と並んで国産ショートショートの御三家と称された。何回も芥川賞候補となる作品を発表した純文学の出身の作家で、質・量ともに群を抜いた作品を書いたと評されている。
慶應義塾大学仏文科を卒業後、「三田文学」を編集し、曽野綾子、江藤淳らをデビューさせる一方で、その後自らも筆を執り、『日々の死』『その一年』『海岸公園』『親しい友人たち』などの短編集を発表。「お守り」の翻訳が米「LIFE」誌に掲載されるなど将来を嘱望されたが、1965年に交通事故により34歳で死去した。
ショートショート作家の代表的存在である星新一は、山川の作品の優れた点を「抑制された余韻」だとし、「ショートショートを書く時、多くの人がやる失敗。それは、どうですこのアイデア、結末の見事さをごらんなさいというとくげな感じが表面化する点だ。・・・だが山川さんの作品はその抑制がきき、しっとりとしたものが全編にみなぎり、静かな余韻が読後にひびくのである。」と書いている。また江藤淳は、「世界中に通じる現代人の恐怖の源泉にふれている。本当に非現実的で、恐いのは、原爆でも宇宙人でもなくて、人間だということを、作者が知っているからである。」と評している。
山川氏は、1931年（昭和６年）生まれ。ここに収録されている多くのショートショートに繰り広げられる世界は、今この時代を生きる私たちの現実世界と遜色ない、新鮮な驚きと感性に満ちた作品である事に、読者は（リスナーは）驚くに違いない。34歳で夭逝した彼は、まさにこれらの作品の中で現代（いま）を生きている。
ショートショート集Ⅰでは、1962年に「ヒッチコック・マガジン」に連載されたシリーズ＜ 親しい友人たち＞12作品を2巻に分けて収録。
