1951年、芥川賞候補となった安岡章太郎の処女作。
『質屋の女房』(新潮文庫)、『ガラスの靴・悪い仲間』 (講談社文芸文庫) 所収。
猟銃店の夜番に雇われていた僕は、米軍軍医の邸宅に散弾を届けにいったところ、色の青白いメードに歓待を受けた。それが悦子との出会いだった。歳は二十歳。「ヒグラシは鳥に決まっている」「雨ガエルがいっぱい入ってきて眠れない」などとにわかには信じられないことを言う彼女だが、私は惚れてしまった。軍医が夏休みで不在の間、邸宅は二人の戯れの場となった。が、悦子は僕に抱かせようとはしなかった。
やがて、軍医の休暇の終わりとともに二人の“夏休み”も終わりを迎える。それを嫌がる悦子。腕の中で胸を打たせている彼女を僕は確信を持って、初めて抱こうとするのだが・・・。（C）wis
