 瀬戸内晴美は、1973年に51歳で、中尊寺で天台宗で得度し、法名を寂聴とした。ただ、出家しても戸籍名を変えなくてもよかったため、俗事の諸手続きの煩さを嫌い、戸籍名はそのままに、仏事の面だけで法名を使い、作家としては俗名の晴美を名乗り続けた。1987年に東北天台寺住職となった時点で戸籍名を寂聴に改めた。
　この12篇の短編から成る作品集の『風のない日々』は、瀬戸内晴美としての執筆の最後に当たる1986年に出版された。執筆活動の面でも、社会的活動の上でも最盛期だった。 　本巻では、4つの作品の朗読を収録している。いずれもそれぞれの人生を生きる中で、心に痛みや翳を抱える男女の哀歓を愛情を持って描いている。
　中央アジアの暑熱のシルクロードへのツァーに参加した中で、男女がそれぞれの人生で抱える鬱屈や翳が交錯し滲み出させていく「風のない日々」。
　「微笑」は、10年以上前に妻に知られて修羅場の末に別れた女の高校生だという娘から、突然「逢いたい」という電話がかかってくる。認知していないその娘に逢う事の重大さはわかりつつ、逢った瞬間、その少女の微笑に見たものとは。
夫との関係は冷めても、終戦後の引き揚げの中産んだ息子の、幼い時から長じて今に至るまで、誰にでもさりげなく見せる優しさを、姑という立場の今も深く愛し見つめ続ける心情を描いた「鞦韆（ぶらんこ）」。
　「白萩」は瀬戸内本人の亡姉への想いをモデルにしたもの。脳血栓で倒れ、痴呆症の症状が出た夫を老妻が献身的に面倒をみるも、自身が癌に侵され余命宣告を受けてしまう。老妻の妹に見え隠れする、義兄が姉を衰弱させる癌の分身であるかのように思う憎しみや強運を呪いたくなる心の揺れが描かれている。
