 夏目漱石の『こころ』は、『彼岸過迄』『行人』に続く、後期三部作の最後の作品。1914年（大正3年）4月から8月まで、『朝日新聞』で「心 先生の遺書」として連載され、同年9月に岩波書店より漱石自身の装丁で刊行された。 心理小説で、孤独、友情、愛、裏切り、罪悪感などのテーマが絡み合って、三部構成で語られる。漱石は自筆の広告文で、「人間の心を研究する者はこの小説を読め」と書いた。
　まず、「上 先生と私」で大学生の「私」（語り手）と「先生」との出会いと交流が描かれる。鎌倉の海岸で偶然知り合った「先生」は、仕事にも就かず、妻とひっそり暮らしているが、孤独で謎めいた人物である。やがて先生の家を訪れるようになったが、先生は私に何度も謎めいた、そして教訓めいたことを言う。また先生の妻からは、夫が自分に何か隠し事をしているように見えること、大学時代の親友が変死してから先生の性質が変わってきたことを聞かされる。そして先生は毎月、雑司ヶ谷にある友達の墓に墓参りをするが、それはあくまで一人で行くのが常だった。私は先生に、その孤独の影の原因になっているであろう過去を語ってくれるように頼み、先生もしかるべき時が来たら話すことを約束した。私は大学を卒業し、先生夫妻に祝いの馳走になったのち、いったん帰省することにした（これが先生との永久（とわ）の別れとなった）。 「中 両親と私」では、帰省して、父親の病状が悪化していき、帰京を先延ばしにしている中で、先生からの分厚い手紙が届く。最初を読んでそれが先生の遺書だと気付いた私は、東京行きの列車に飛び乗った。©2024 響林社 (P)響林社 Asian World Literature
