Když pak krajem prochází mlčenlivý mág Ogion, pošeptá chlapci při obřadu průchodu jeho skutečné jméno - Ged a nabídne mu, že jej vezme do učení. Ctižádostivému a nadmíru zvědavému Gedovi však brzy Ogionova moudrost přestává stačit. Odchází tedy do Velkého přístavu a pak ještě dál, na ostrov čarodějů, aby se zde učil od devíti mistrů. Netuší však, jaký osud mu jeho ctižádost a slepá odvaha připraví..
