Julie Goodwin was catapulted into our hearts as the first-ever winner of MasterChef Australia. In many ways her win was unlikely. As a child Julie adored music and art, but her career began in youth work, including in a juvenile detention centre housing troubled boys and a toxic all-male staff. After her three sons were born, she and her husband started an IT business.
Then came MasterChef - a record-breaking juggernaut of a show. The attention and opportunities that flowed from Julie's win were thrilling and overwhelming. She became a columnist for Australian Women's Weekly, a presenter on Today, published numerous cookbooks and made appearances on many shows including facing off with snakes and alligators on I'm A Celebrity . Get Me Out of Here! For years she co-hosted an award-winning breakfast radio show, and she opened a thriving cooking school.
It was by all appearances, a successful, rewarding life. But under the surface relentless pressure from Julie's outer and inner worlds was taking its toll. Struggling with depression, anxiety and addiction, with bushfires blazing and lockdowns looming, Julie found herself hospitalised in a mental health unit.
Her recovery, bumpy and circuitous, is an ongoing process that Julie tackles with tenacity. In this gloriously candid, deeply moving memoir, filled with beautiful food, astonishing people, humour and heart, Julie writes with brutal honesty about her struggles. We are brought into her story, into her unravelling and quest for healing as she seeks to resume a richly lived life.

like hearing a friend tell you a story
I loved hearing Julie read her story in her own voice with her emotions and mannerisms. As a local Central Coastie I loved knowing where most of the places, people or events were. Her life has definitely been a roller coaster ride without the seatbelt but am glad she has found her peace.

Best book I’ve listened to in a long time
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked the amount of time and attention Julie paid to each event in her life. Honest and interesting.

Wonderfully written and told
At times confronting, this is Julie's truth. A deeper insight into someone I have followed in the public eye since 2009 and that famous Masterchef win. I went through all of the emotions whilst listening, and didn't want it to end. Thank you for helping to end the stigma around seeking treatment for mental health. Now I'm off to buy the paper version of this book.

Your Gift is Medicine
I preordered this book as my husband saw Julie talking about it and he thought it maybe something I would get a lot out of. Well if I had ordered the paper version it would have been like Julie picked the book up and slammed me in the face. It was like at most that Julie reached into my heart and soul and put my life in words something I have been thinking of doing but not being strong enough to start.
Thank you Julie for your raw honesty and telling your truths with such emotion and conviction. I’m so thankful to Julie for shining a light for me to be strong enough to know where I need help and be strong enough to walk the paths needed to help straighten my path.
If I ever have the opportunity to cross paths with you I would grab hold of you and give you the biggest hug because it would mean you have guided me in the right path. God Bless you and your family and may you take comfort in your journey ahead knowing your struggles has helped at least one person.
I’m so grateful that I purchased this book on Audiobooks and that you had the strength to tell your story in person, I don’t think it would have had the same affect just reading the book.

Julie’s Honesty
I LOVED this book.
Julie’s deep love, honesty & compassion, is as evident in this book as she came over in the very first series of MasterChef.

An amazing lady
I loved Julie Goodwin’s honest and interesting life story. Such a brave, mother and wife who has had a roller coaster ride of events through her life. I could not stop listening to it
