About this listen

Then is the second story of Felix and Zelda.

They escaped from the Nazis, but how long can they now survive when there are so many people ready to hand them over for a reward?

Thanks to the courage of a kind, brave woman they are able to hide for a time in the open, but Felix knows he has a distinguishing feature that identifies him as a Jew and that it is only a matter of time before he is discovered, which will mean death for them all. Even though he promised Zelda he would never leave her, he knows he has to, before it is too late.

Editorial reviews

The second installment of Morris Gleitzman’s heart-rending, WWII-set Once, Then, & Now trilogy opens with Felix and Zelda scurrying across the Polish countryside after bravely escaping a Nazi train bound for a death camp, and follows them on their journey to find a home and reestablish a sense of normalcy in the face of unspeakable tragedy.

Morris Gleitzman’s pitch-perfect performance of his own work masterfully captures his vivid, tactile prose and the complex amalgam of emotions - despair, fear, love, and ultimately, hope - on display in this accomplished and unflinching short story for young adults in the vein of The Diary of Anne Frank.

Critic Reviews

"Haunting... dangerous and desperate, but also full of courage and hope." (The Guardian)

"Funny and shocking at the same time." (Jewish Chronicle)

Absolutely Brilliant!!,

It was sad, emotional and absolutely amazing!
I loved the twist.
I couldn’t stop listening to it and I was sad when it was over.
Although it was a bit scary and sad sometimes so I would suggest it for everyone over 10 years.
I am looking forward to the next book!!!

A story of great courage

This is the second book in a gripping family of books. In Then, we get to hear about how Felix and his best friend Zelda try to get new parents. Also, this book is also sad at times to because in this book the Nazis hang Zelda. Once again, due to the language, violence and torture this is a good book for anyone over 9. May I also recommend that for children aged 9 - 13 that haven't heard of the Holocaust, that before letting them read it you both have a sit down and discuss it so that the child can prepare to hear about the horrors of the Holocaust.

sooo good and sooooo sad

this is such a good read and I definetly recommend it to anyone 12 and up (possibly 11). It has some realllllyy realllly sad bits but I wouldn't put it off because of that because it's all real stuff that the Nazis did. You probs should read once (the book before this one) first because this book will speak to you more. all and all AWESOME book.

Great story. Annoying chapter breaks

This book is terrific and the narration is excellent. Unfortunately in between EVERY short chapter plays a musical piece that is so jarring. It really breaks the flow of the story. Please get rid of it.

I loved this book as much as “Once”

This was sooo good, I was a bit shocked when Zelda died but overall I loved this as much as all his books like Once, Boy overboard, etc.
