Lots of humour.

Loved the many humoured stories. And being Australian I found the section about his time spent here very interesting. Always enjoy listening to the stories of the Marines taking a lot of our slang back with them. Found the narrator to be very good. Well worth the listen.

Unassuming, cheerful account of Marine life

Most potential readers will be familiar with the ‘Pacific’ miniseries and Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie’s accounts of the same or related events. Phillip’s account is more upbeat perhaps reflecting his sunny personality and relatively less traumatic experience.

Interestingly like the other two authors he expresses strong Christian views largely ignored in the TV series. He also emphasises the power of dark humour in coping with the intense stress of battle and boredom in between action.

Definitely worth listening to.

Interesting recollection of an amazing Marine

Good book, well narated. Bit more light hearted than with the old breed or helmet for my pillow. Did not like the author's opinion on evolution at the end. Totally unrelated to subject of book. lost a star for it.
