About this listen

James Bond seems unable to function after the death of his wife. Determined to restore 007 to the effective agent he used to be, M sends him on a mission to Japan, to the mysterious ‘Castle of Death’ and into the lair of an old and terrifying enemy. For Bond and Blofeld, this will be their final encounter. Only one of them can survive.

Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Martin Jarvis.

Bond comes off as a bit of a wimp

So, in itself, I understand, this is the third novel in the Blofeld trilogy, and Bond is super depressed despite being a cold killer in the earlier novels. Though appariently the Call to Adventure is meant to have remedied his problem, but the writing stays depressingly uncertain and full anxieties and uncertainties. On the other hand, Flemings Journey into Japan and interpretation of Japanese culture is interesting.

There is not much by way of thriller here, more in the last two hours, and it is a novel primarily consisting of Flemings more flowery prose. The showdown at the end seemed unearned, and lazy. Blofeld could have easily dispatched Bond at any moment when Bond was under his control.

The narrator seemed to understand the assignment, and took the uncertainty of Bond throughout the adventure, which I personally didn't enjoy as it made Bond out to be a wimp. Though, he did a good job with the Japanese accents, making the Japanese agent likeable. Otherwise, solid narration.

The third book to the Blofeld trilogy is the weakest. But worth reading as a package.

Great Book

This is one of my favourite books and rounds of the trilogy nicely. It really brings new dimensions to Bond.

Incredible narrator

The story itself dragged a bit for me in the middle but it was still a very enjoyable listen. The narrator was amazing.
