About this listen

Casey has ended up back in Massachusetts after a devastating love affair. Her mother has just died, and she is knocked sideways by grief and loneliness, moving between the restaurant where she waitresses for the Harvard elite and the rented shed she calls home. Her one constant is the novel she has been writing for six years, but at 31 she is in debt and directionless, and feels too old to be that way - it’s strange, not to be the youngest kind of adult anymore.

And then, one evening, she meets Silas. He is kind, handsome, interested. But only a few weeks later, Oscar walks into her restaurant, his two boys in tow. He is older, grieving the loss of his wife, and wrapped up in his own creativity. Suddenly Casey finds herself at the point of a love triangle, torn between two very different relationships that promise two very different futures.

Lily King's Writers & Lovers follows Casey in the last days of a long youth, a time when everything - her family, her work, her relationships - comes to a crisis. Hugely moving and impossibly funny, it is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another. It is a novel about love and creativity, and ultimately it captures the moment when a woman becomes an artist.

Critic Reviews

"Exuberant and affirming, it's funny and immensely clever, emotionally rare and strong. I feel bereft now I've finished." (Tessa Hadley)

Gorgeous

A beautiful read. I loved the way it explored love, grief, creativity and the hustle behind it. Loved it.

Enjoyable audiobook

I started the hard copy of this book.. but couldn’t get into it. So I started the audiobook (so I could finish this book in time for bookclub) and what a difference this narrator has made to this story. I really enjoyed this book- what an enjoyable, light audiobook to listen to.

Very cool

So enjoyable and beautifully narrated. An uplifting story. I hope there will be a sequel as there is more to hear from this character.

Loved everything

I was so sad when it ended, not because of the ending itself, but because I had become so embedded in Casey’s life. The character development was well done, as it didn’t lead the reader to predict where the story was going…I guess it made it feel like life itself, we never truly know where we will end up. The writing also was so well thought out with the description of small moments, that it allowed the reader to get the visceral sensation of what was happening, moment by moment. One last thing - I felt it to be strongly relatable to a single person in their 30s, and as the therapist said a “gambler” that is taking a bet on themselves. It can be lonely when all of your friends as in relationships, have secure jobs, are getting married. I guess this novel sang to those of us who are not on the societal- typical trajectories and gave comfort that we are not alone. Thank you Lily King.

Probably the emotion

The narration is exceptional. The story is heartrending and very hard to stop listening to. Loved this book! Just praying there’s another Lily King novel out there for me to read.
