About this listen

Thrilling, authentic, and action packed, this novel introduces soldier hero Marcus Valerius: a centurion stationed on Hadrian's Wall in the second century during a revolt against the Roman Empire.

Marcus Valerius Aquila has scarcely landed in Britannia when he has to run for his life - condemned to dishonorable death by power-crazed emperor Commodus. The plan is to take a new name, serve in an obscure regiment on Hadrian's Wall, and lie low until he can hope for justice. Then a rebel army sweeps down from the wastes north of the wall, and Marcus has to prove he's hard enough to lead a century in the front line of a brutal, violent war.

A story spoken with great enthusiasm...

Everything a gripping war story should be.
But the main protagonist (Marcus) sounds a tad effeminate. Very engrossing story telling.

Great start, I know I'll love the series already

The author must be a masrer. Well written, descriptive and captivating. It's pure dramatic fiction licence no doubt but still must have been thoroughly researched. Along with one of my favourite narrators who helps to bring the story alive in his usual way I heartily recommend the series ...on to book 2 for me and I know I'll love it !

Can't wait

After finishing all the Ben Kane and Harry sidebottom books I was looking for another series to follow.

And This is definitely it! I'll admit it started a but slow but most first books do but as it all came together for the massive ending it was definitely worth it.

On to Empire II. 👍

A Real Find.

At last a competitor for Bernard Cornwall. Full of characters that you can enjoy and bond with , a great yarn with lots of historical detail, and treachery and treason in spades.

What more is needed.

historical fiction

Cool. Adventures of Roman Legionnaires in Britain. I enjoyed hearing from the men in the ranks and their dark humour. Also the politics of empire and officers. Go the Chosen Man.

Nightmare narration

Whilst the storyline was plausible, the narration was not. Will not be able to stomach another title narrated by Saul Reichlin
Settled into this, willing myself not to turn it off. A very difficult challenge indeed

I feel bad about this

The story seems great.
But I just can’t continue with it.
And worse still I cannot tell if it’s the writing or the performance.
I mean, these people have worked hard on this, I hate that I hate it.
