About this listen

Scraps, a gutter child, is sitting in his hiding place in a back alley, waiting for the cold thunderstorm to pass. Suddenly, lightning strikes in front of him, and then a second time. The two lightning bolts become men — two wizards — one from the Red Order, the other from the Blue.

The Red Wizard, chanting his curses, throws lightning bolts and fireballs. The Blue Wizard, singing his spells, throws lightning bolts and ice shards. So intense is their fighting, they become lightning rods. It seemed as if God himself cast his lightning bolt, striking the ground between them and consuming both wizards in its white blaze. Scraps watched as the lightning bolt gouged its way across the alley, striking him.

Rain on his face awakens Scraps. The only thing left of the fighting wizards is a smoking crater and their scattered artifacts. He feels compelled to gather their possessions and hide them and himself. The dispersed items glowed red or blue, and he notices that he now has a magenta aura. Magenta, a combination of both red and blue, but more powerful than either.

Scraps then does what he has done all his life to survive. He hides. And unknowingly, he has become the catalyst for change in the Kingdom.

Magic brick

The lead character has the personality of a brick there is just no way to feel a connection to him and the romance between him and the queen made me laugh, what romance the whole storyline was pretty average

Easy listening

A fairly decent fantasy, easy to get involved in and enjoy the tail; or is it tale can’t remember, of the gutter rat come wizard who try’s to help those he can

Great ideas, poor continuity/execution

Moments of brilliance in the writing. There's a great starting idea but the continuity and world building is lacking. The magic system seems like it's intended to initially have rules but the main character doesn't seem to have the same rules applied. The value of money seems to fluctuate through the book.
There's no foreshadowing of events more than a chapter ahead so it feels like it's a character/world building beginning that was to be re written.
Some great ideas and I enjoyed the writing style barring those concerns.

The best novel that I have read in a long time!

This story is so capturing in every way possible! It is so unique and throws you so deeply into the personality of the main character that you come out wanting to strive for more in life. It is everything I have been searching for in a book and more! I absolutely cannot wait to see what James will come up with in the future.

It is way better than Harry Potter!

Thank you so much James Haddock!

Fabulous

This was amazingly good. I bought it on a whim based on one complementary review. So glad I did. A delightful story and good narration, so overall great. Highly recommend if you want something light. Hope there is more to come, soon!

Great concept. Lazy writing

Started of interesting, then got really boring in the middle. Just a lot of lazy writing. Then ended really well? If the whole story was written with the same attention as the start and end, I would have given it 5 stars. But I really struggled getting through the middle. The middle was just a lot of “he did this, and it was done”, just no depth to provide colours and emotion.

Thank you to the narrator Daniel Wisniewski , who’s brilliant voice helped me get through this book.

Simple but effective

The writing in this story is really simple. Yet it doesn’t feel lazy. What the writing lacks in literary techniques it makes up for in actual story telling. In a lot of fantasy novels it takes 3 books for the character to do anything significant and meaningful without stumbling across it accidentally. Enjoyable.
