Max Kane and his sister Robin are hired to discover what happened to a young forest service worker in the vast Boundary Waters canoe area wilderness of Northern Minnesota. Was she, as the local authorities surmise, attacked and killed by a rogue black bear like her male colleague, or did she simply escape the bear and get lost in the massive wilderness?
