Publisher's Summary
After her capture at the hands of Grandmother and the Second Empire, Karigan G'ladheon is making halting progress towards recovery. Karigan takes on increasingly dangerous missions, haunted by the specter of her torturer, Nyssa, and sinking ever further into the mire of her recollections of the past and the losses she's sustained.
Meanwhile, the forces of the Second Empire are moving on Sacoridia and their primary target is a vulnerable garrison that guards a crucial mountain pass. Faced with new fatherhood and a country on the verge of war, King Zachary sends a contingent of soldiers and Green Riders to the pass - but his own recovery from the events of the north is not yet complete either.
Reunited with her fellow Riders at the pass, Karigan takes on a leadership role, but quickly finds that the Riders are not as she last left them. As tension mounts and war draws ever closer to the heart of Sacoridia, Karigan must discover what it truly means to be a Rider and a hero of the realm - and what sacrifices must be made to truly heal from her past.

Give Karigan a break already
Mixed feelings about this one. It was good to see the progression of story but with all the horrible things that happen to the main character I'm starting to think the author really hates Karigan.
Give the poor girl a break already! Is it so hard to write even half a page to allow her a bit of recovery and relaxation time? Does she really need to cop all of it?
Hopefully she will lighten up in the next one and bring back a bit of the lighthearted fun adventure bits which where few and far between in this tome.

Action and adventure
This story felt like we were back in the main action of the plot and have more details I now want answers to. Hopefully it won’t be too long until the next release!

Praise, Feedback and Potential Spoiler Alert
I found this series just a few months before Blackveil was to be released and have loved reading and listening to the books. The narrator does justice to the book and to the characters. The thing I found really well portrayed was the PTSD she was suffering through after her injuries in the previous book. Yes there was more whining and complaining in this book than in previous books but for me, that just made it all the more believable. After all, there are only so many traumatic events you can soldier your way through before they drag you down.
(Potential Spoiler)
Regarding the romantic relationships, between Karrigan, Zachary and Estora, I can see how some of the reviewers of the book are over it. However, the book talks about “true heart mates” repeatedly throughout the series to justify the prolonged desire. For me, I felt that the romance between Karrigan and Cade developed too swiftly and was not as deep as the feelings between Karrigan and Zachary. Estora's decision was not what I was expecting after all the prior hints that were dropped throughout the book and I can't help but feel there is an ulterior motive for what she did.
The horse mating that is in the book, feels to me like it has a very important aspect to play in the next book. There is more details on sexual encounters in this book than in previous books, which will put some people off. Didn't bother me as I've read some books that should rightly be called erotica rather than whatever other genre they were classed as.
(End Potential Spoiler)
There were multiple plots going on in this book and set the scene really well for the next book to come. Each plot was distinct but well integrated into the overall plot that it didn't feel disjointed of confusing.
Kristen Britain also did not pull any punches when it comes to describing the war scenes and the blood and gore that accompanies it. She also goes into enough detail when it comes to the atrocities of war to make you understand the true import of what is going on and it's consequences. She doesn't hold back when talking about the good and bad of both sides of the war, and the fault that can be placed at the feet of both the Sacoridians and the Arcosian's.
If you are bothered by gore, or the increased descriptions of intimate (sexual) moments then you may not enjoy this book as much as previous books. For me, I loved this book so much that I was extremely reluctant to put it down for any reason. I plan to immediately re-listen to it to make sure I didn't miss out on details. Also be warned that it ends on a sort of cliff-hanger. The cliff-hanger isn't of the same calibre as the one found at the end of Blackveil, but more along the lines of plot points that have not had proper closure.
