Publisher's Summary
Before World War II could reach its conclusion, the world suffered what could only be defined as a cataclysm.
Legend has it that an experiment failed. Catastrophically so. And when it failed, the center of the United States, from the Sierra Nevada to the Mississippi river became "The Waste", where everything changed.
Except, it didn't only happen in North America. In fact, it happened all around the world.
Few places were spared, though only a handful experienced it as deeply as the United States did.
In the Wastes of the world, every fantasy creature, fairy tale demon, or mythological monster exists. From Orcs, to Neriads, Ogres, Trolls, Wraiths, Elves, Harpies, and even Beastmen. They all exist, and all despise humankind.
For North America, in the shattered bones of the country, the west and east coasts new governments have rose, then fell.
Vince has become the master of a major portion of the Wastes of North America. Responsible for everything and everyone inside his boundaries. There is little that doesn’t fall under his purview.
He's delivered the world-view of Yosemite to Europe.
Or more specifically, the Iberian peninsula.
Waging a war to free the inhabitants from an oppressive regime that believes all magic is wrong.
Every form of magical ability is a crime, and the only punishment is death.
Vince is going to close out his appeal to their judicial system with vengeance, all while giving them a heavy taste of Legion technology.
An appeal that’ll change the lives of everyone across the whole of Europe.

Still a ripping yarn, but starting to feel padded
I am enjoying most of the series in this universe, but do feel this and the previous Wild Wastes were a little padded with interactions and scenes that did little to move the story forward. Even so, these gamelit books are still well above the bulk of such novels. And the climax and cliff hanger of this novel... Made it all worthwhile. Dang! No spoilers, but... Dang, I did not expect THAT!
As others have stated, the change of narrator was a shock. Few narrators come close to the quality of the previous narrator: I buy audio books just to listen to how Andrea Parseau brings the characters to life with unique voicing and emotional impact. She is just that good. But putting the brilliance of Andrea Parsneau aside, the new narrator does a great job. Better than most here on Audible. So I'm not marking anything down because of the change.
Fans of the series will get their fix with this book. Like a well aged anime series, it just gets more fun and complex as it goes on.

new narrator threw me.
I hate when a series switches narrators part way through, it's even worse when they pronounce names differently and the voice of one of the characters end up sounding exactly like Ralf Wiggum from the Simpsons.

it's a no from me
I understand William and Andrea had some kind of falling out and he needed a new narrator, but honestly don't like Stephs voice for most of the characters made it really hard to get through this one.
might have to wait for the paperback for book 6. unfortunately I don't think I'll continue the other books with her as the narrator.
