About this listen

Jane Bancroft has returned to Lovett, Tasmania after 20 years away, minus one ex-husband but plus one outraged teenage daughter. Life in the city – life in general – hasn’t quite panned out as she would have liked. With her mother unwell, now seems as good a time as any to come back to where it all began, and perhaps even start a new life here in the heart of Tasmanian apple country. But the legacy of Jane's wild apple youth has not been forgotten by small-town Lovett and her homecoming is haunted by past tragedy.

Jane’s not the only child of Lovett returning home. Drew Pascoe, one-time scrawny kid working the pub kitchens, now handsome celebrity chef, is also back in town and looking to re-establish his roots. With the blessing of the locals and in an effort to reinvigorate tourism to Lovett, Drew has restored the old homestead Valleyfield, and plans to televise its opening as Tasmania’s hottest new dining destination. He knows a key ingredient to success is a unique homegrown flavour: Jane's mother Thea, crowned Apple Queen of Lovett and the cantankerous guardian of the legendary recipe for apple snow. But the charm offensive he’s launched on Thea is not the only reason he's keen to spend quite so much time with Jane.

Between her mother's bitterness, her daughter's escapades and the struggle to rebuild a her life, helping Lovett’s new golden boy with his grand plans are not Jane's priority. But Drew's enchanting persistence is making Jane realise that mending old wounds and a homegrown romance may in fact be the only way to start a fresh new chapter.

From Misfortune Comes Deliverance

“Wild Apples” centres on Jane, pressed between her mother, Thea, and her teenage daughter, Scarlet. They live in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, in a very recognizable location. Thea was the Apple Queen in her youth. She (and the author) know a great deal about apples.
Jane has become introverted, partly because of her relationship with her mother and daughter, and partly because of events that occurred 20 years earlier.
Enter Drew: a local boy made good as a celebrity chef. He has bought Jane and Thea’s old homestead and is renovating it to become a local drawcard. Drew pursues Jane; Jane resists, but not indefinitely. Thea is suffering and is perpetually angry at Jane and Scarlet, but Drew wins her over. Scarlet provides dramatic content.
There are many fine passages in this book, climaxing with Thea’s epiphany delivered from her hospital bed. Any further information would create spoilers. I highly recommend this audiobook, as well as all of Minnie Darke’s printed works.

Perfect Pick!

I really enjoyed this; well written and cosy but the characters had depth and I was drawn into the town of Lovett. Beautifully narrated too.

Captivating

I loved this story - the guilt of love and duty is truly what every mother feels putting herself often second to everyone around her. Well narrated - easy to follow (& yes sometimes I felt like shaking Jane to her senses). Just lovely.

Apple grove, Love !!

I enjoyed this story immensely, yes it’s on the normal everyday side, but ! As a parent and now a grandmother, I could relate to some of the circumstances that happen.
The descriptive side of the story was wonderful.
The narrator did a fabulous job giving the story life. Her voice was wonderful to listen to, her flow and her Australian accent made it easy to appreciate, Aussie fan here. I’ll be looking for more stories from her.
Being a free book with out subscription made me listen, I will definitely be looking for more from this author and narrator.

Great story about mother and daughter issues

History repeats itself, and it is sometimes hard to say why it cannot be stopped, before you know your head down the same road

Enjoyed it

Kept my attention all the way. Clever writing and really good look at what drives us and keeps us locked up - unprocessed experiences that lead to misunderstandings and can completely change your way of life. I thought this was well written, engaging, well read, great characterisations, and kept me interested. I could just see it as a telemovie with Asher Keddy playing the key role.
