About this listen
A generation-defining examination of the new midlife crisis facing Gen X women and the unique circumstances that have brought them to this point, Why We Can’t Sleep is a lively successor to Passages by Gail Sheehy and The Defining Decade by Meg Jay.
When Ada Calhoun found herself in the throes of a midlife crisis, she thought that she had no right to complain. She was married with children and a good career. So why did she feel miserable? And why did it seem that other Generation X women were miserable, too?
Calhoun decided to find some answers. She looked into housing costs, HR trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data. At every turn, she saw a pattern: sandwiched between the Boomers and Millennials, Gen X women were facing new problems as they entered middle age, problems that were being largely overlooked.
Speaking with women across America about their experiences as the generation expected to “have it all”, Calhoun found that most were exhausted, terrified about money, under-employed, and overwhelmed. Instead of their issues being heard, they were told to lean in, take “me time”, or make a chore chart to get their lives and homes in order.
In Why We Can’t Sleep, Calhoun opens up the cultural and political contexts of Gen X’s predicament and offers solutions for how to pull oneself out of the abyss - and keep the next generation from falling in. The result is reassuring, empowering, and essential listening for all middle-aged women, and anyone who hopes to understand them.

the relief we needed as a generation
An insightful drawing together of world events that created such an outlier generation as we are.

I am seen!
What a relief to know my experiences and worries are shared, is not widely discussed, by so many of my contemporaries. Initially, hearing that there was a clear, reasonable explanation that we're struggling make me angry - if the situation is so clear and the response is so reasonable, why isn't more done about it?! However, as the layers of research and personal stories built up into the complete picture, it was very soothing to realise that we're actually facing such an unprecedented and complex life phase that we're doing pretty darned well to be sleeping at all! Phew, and Cheers to us!
I'll be recommending this audiobook to all my GenX friends.

Equally infuriating and inspiring
This book will make you cry with the relief of having finally been heard, slam your first on the counter with anger at the injustice of your life and then weep again because you will realise that it's mostly out of your control.
Overall, This is a very necessary but difficult book to listen to because of the content. I found it terrific for helping me understand why I feel the way I do as a Gen X. Calhoun's recommendation of just 'having to accept our lot' left me feeling the conclusion was in adequate compared to the density of the book's chapter content.
But the chapter content is excellent!
It's a must listen to for all my Gen X female friends, although guys will like it too.
But I would have liked more about 'what I can do' above acceptance.
