About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the bestselling author of Wonder comes White Bird: an unforgettable Second World War story about bravery, friendship and the power of kindness.

A major film starring Ariella Glaser, Orlando Schwerdt, Bryce Gheisar, Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson.

Sara Blum lives an idyllic life. But her world comes crashing down when the Nazi occupation arrives in her small French town, separating her from her parents and forcing the young Jewish girl into hiding. Sara's classmate Julien and his family will risk everything to ensure her survival, and together, Sara and Julien manage to find beauty in a secret world of their creation.

Originally published as a graphic novel, and featuring characters from the multi-million-copy-bestselling phenomenon Wonder, Sara and Julien's powerful, heartbreaking and timeless story is told here for the first time as a novel, and shows the power of kindness to change hearts, build bridges, and even save lives in the darkest of times.

A Heartfelt Reflection on White Bird by R.J. Palacio

As a Southeast Asian woman and a staunch advocate for anti-bullying in all its forms, reading White Bird by R.J. Palacio was a deeply moving and transformative experience. The book’s poignant narrative touched the core of my belief in standing against violence and marginalization, no matter who the victim is or where they come from.

At its heart, White Bird is a story of courage, compassion, and the profound impact of kindness. The story transported me to a time of unimaginable hardship during the Holocaust, but the parallels to our present day are undeniable. In a world still grappling with discrimination and bullying, the book serves as both a reminder and a call to action. It resonated deeply with me, as it mirrors my own commitment to creating a culture of understanding and inclusion.

What struck me most was the character of Julien, whose quiet bravery in standing up for what is right reminded me of the many unsung heroes in our communities—those who dare to challenge injustice, even at great personal cost. The depiction of Sara’s vulnerability and strength also brought to mind the resilience of women everywhere who face oppression yet rise above it with dignity.

This story reaffirmed my belief that the smallest acts of kindness can be revolutionary. It reminded me of the importance of fostering empathy in young people—an endeavor I am passionate about, both as a supporter of anti-bullying initiatives and as someone who believes in the transformative power of education.

Reading White Bird felt deeply personal because its message transcends cultures and generations. It is a story that belongs to all of us, a plea to never forget history’s darkest moments, and a reminder to choose kindness in the face of adversity. For anyone who believes in the power of stories to heal and inspire change, this book is not just a read—it’s a must.

White Bird reminded me why I continue to champion the rights of the overlooked and why I believe in the power of our voices, no matter how small they may feel, to ripple out and create change.
