About this listen
Inspired by the McMartin preschool trials and the Satanic Panic of the ’80s, the critically acclaimed author of The Remaking delivers another pulse-pounding, true-crime-based horror novel.
Richard doesn’t have a past. For him, there is only the present: a new marriage to Tamara, a first chance at fatherhood to her son, Elijah, and a quiet but pleasant life as an art teacher at Elijah’s elementary school in Danvers, Virginia. Then the body of a rabbit, ritualistically murdered, appears on the school grounds with a birthday card for Richard tucked beneath it. Richard doesn’t have a birthday - but Sean does....
Sean is a five-year-old boy who has just moved to Greenfield, Virginia, with his mother. Like most mothers of the 1980s, she’s worried about bills, childcare, putting food on the table...and an encroaching threat to American life that can take the face of anyone: a politician, a friendly neighbor, or even a teacher. When Sean’s school sends a letter to the parents revealing that Sean’s favorite teacher is under investigation, a white lie from Sean lights a fire that engulfs the entire nation - and Sean and his mother are left holding the match.
Now, 30 years later, someone is here to remind Richard that they remember what Sean did. And though Sean doesn’t exist anymore, someone needs to pay the price for his lies.

Great performance and twisting story
I listened to this in four days, I just couldn't stop.
it helps the narration was so good!
I few twists I saw coming, so for a seasoned spooky reader this wasn't anything too surprising but oh boy, it hit me in the feels at the end and really got me thinking.
I love a story that makes you think!

A Great Story but …
Two thirds of this novel was really good, I couldn’t wait to hear the next chapter.
But then it began to lose its way and became disjointed and sometimes confusing. I can still say I enjoyed it overall, just a little disappointed it didn’t quite reach its potential.

A Little White Lie Never Hurt Anyone...
TW - Animal and Children Cruelty and Abuse, Conspiracy Theories, Violence, Homophobia, Prejudice, Gaslighting, Domestic Violence, Satanic Panic, Coercion,
It started with a… rabbit and just a little white lie but, where will it end?
Everything comes full circle… even a pentagram.

Just annoying
I was really looking forward to this and it was promising at the start but it really let me down. The storyline was pretty flat throughout, the characters were completely all unlikeable. Having unlikeable characters is fine if they own it but these were written in such a light that just made them annoying. The narrators accent really got on my nerves - an overly zealous millennial American twang - this might be a personal thing for myself, as I really try to limit the amount of American media that seems to permeate everything, but he was really not my cup of tea.
Will probably delete off my library, yuck.
