About this listen

He picks a pocket and discovers a sinister plot

New York, 1937

The thief they call the Smoke encounters an obnoxious bully on the streets of New York. To teach him a lesson, the Smoke picks his pocket. But on opening the brute’s billfold he discovers items that arouse suspicion. A newspaper clipping, an odd blueprint, and a membership card to a secret society seem to point to a plot of unspeakable terror.

Curious, the Smoke delves into the mystery and is thrust into a whirlwind of intrigue and danger. As dubious characters crawl out of the woodwork, he finds himself caught in the crosshairs of a Nazi terror cell, and his probing creates a backlash that dumps a string of murders on his doorstep.

Before he knows it, the cops and FBI are involved. But now the Smoke is up to his eyeballs and has become their prime suspect in the plot.

Can he expose the evil before it’s too late? Or will hundreds of people perish in a fireball?
