Publisher's Summary

Rob and Karan are a great couple, but they're tearing apart under the pressures of modern life. They both work as paramedics for the NHS, and just before Christmas, their plans for the future are in jeopardy.

Rob knows he's on thin ice with the man he loves more than anyone else in the world, and he's at a loss to fix it. The job is getting tougher, and Karan, who's of Sikh descent, is facing violence on the streets in the wake of Britain's decision to leave the EU. Financial problems, hostile families on both sides.... Their troubles seem insoluble.

An emergency callout stops them on the brink of a final and heartbreaking row. In a forest on the bleak northern hills, Rob loses control of the van in the snow. The only gleam of light comes from a strange, lonely house among the trees. Lost, cut off from the world they know, can they find their way back to one another? It's the longest night of the year, and spirits are abroad among the pines....

Short and So So Sweet

Beautiful. I don't know why I hesitated for even a moment.

Harper always manages to wrench such emotion out of me. So perfectly written.

Devastatingly beautiful

Harper Fox hitting me in the feels as usual. It's amazing how she can flesh out characters so entirely, and take you on a heart wrenching but uplifting journey in such a short story.
Narration by Tim Gilbert also fabulous.

Confusing at times but packed a punch!

Paramedics Rob and his boyfriend, Karan, have been drifting apart for a lot fo reasons. They answer a callout on a snowy night, managing to get to the house despite crashing their ambulance. The woman seems a little unhinged, but it’s nothing compared to how Rob and Karan feel when the photo album they pick up contains photos of their life together. This is a very short romance (47 pp, just over a hour on audio). Not my favourite Harper Fox story, I spent a lot of time confused about what was happening and not really enjoying the coy magical realism of it all once I understood. Told from Rob’s POV, I did like the resolution and the thoughtful exploration of the casual, and the overt, racism Karan experienced against the backdrop of Brexit. UK voice actor Tim Gilbert narrated the audio well (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).
