About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

As any feminist who talks about the problems of girls and women will know, the first question you will ever be asked is 'But what about MEN?' After eleven years of writing bestsellers about women and dismissing this question, having been very sure that the concerns of feminism and men are very different things, Caitlin Moran realised that this wasn't quite right, and that the problems of feminism are also the problems of, yes, men.

So, what about men? Why do they only go to the doctor if their wife or girlfriend makes them? Why do they never discuss their penises with each other - but make endless jokes about their balls? What is porn doing for young men? Is their fondness for super-skinny jeans leading to an epidemic of bad mental health? Are men allowed to be sad? Are men allowed to lose? Have Men's Rights Activists confused 'power' with 'empowerment'? And is Jordan B Peterson just your mum - but with some mad theory about a lobster?

In this book, Caitlin intends to answer all this and more - because if men haven't yet answered the question 'What About Men?', it's going to be down to a busy woman to do it.

'A must-read eye-opener that makes you laugh, cry, get angry and get happy on every page. It's magnificent' Bob Mortimer

'I fall passionately in love with absolutely every single thing Caitlin Moran writes - and I've fallen very hard for this book... Eye-opener, page-turner, women-translator, guy-empowerer - put like that, I hope you'll agree it's incredibly reasonably priced' Marina Hyde

'Our greatest modern writer on women turns her eyes on men - and it's all good' David Baddiel

Painful, like compulsory units in university.

I forced myself to finish it, but cannot in any way endorse the author's feminist experience of what it is to be male. I don't know Peterson or Tate, and can only assume her male friends are big city people. She states being a man must be boring, if so many men want to dress up as a woman. Men do all the amazingly exciting things, deep sea exploration, space exploration, making inventions to improve all of our day to day lives, hunting, fishing, motocross, camping, four wheel driving, while women wear make-up, painful shoes, enjoy going to restaurants, talking about feelings and stabbing each other in the back.

where is the science? very poor writing

this reads like a bunch of unsubstantiated random opinions from someone who really doesn't actually know that much about men. there were some interesting bits but I kept wondering whether she did any research at all to write this book. also she could have easily deconstructed Jordan Peterson in a way that didn't attack his mental health. someone with mental health issues can still be a role model. the way she spoke implied that this couldn't be the case. the better argument would have been that the man has let his mental health issues get in the way of his ability to remain objective and appropriate. but to simply say that he's depressed, therefore don't listen to him, well, I have serious issues with that.

Couldn't finish.

I was very excited for this book. Hoping to gain some insight on raising "good" men and reversing the patriarchy's damage. Unfortunately I only made it halfway through this book and couldn't continue.
It was anecdotal - quoting opinions from male friends or men online, and didn't feel relevant or current enough for the newer generation of men.
I think this book just didn't give me what I wanted from it.
It was more of a general conversation with friends about "men".

Deleted

Deleted after 3 chapters. First chapter seemed promising then seemed to me to turn out to be uninformed chat chat. I’d prefer to hear from a more informed perspective to make it useful as a mother with a teenage boy or at least entertaining.

So bad.

This missed the mark badly. It relied on many shallow stereotypes (both of men and women) and was extremely hard to relate to. I couldn’t finish it, it was that bad. The writing style was also super arrogant (especially grating when so many if the statements were based on 100% opinion). Strongly do not recommend.

Every man should read it - and would be a better person for it

I bought it after listening to an interview with Caitlin and Kim Hill on RNZ
I work as a therapist and if men read and took note of the points in Caitlin’s book, I would have far fewer male clients.
Of course there are generalisations, but she’s on the money time and time again.
Wonderfully written with humour and full of useful information.
Thank you for writing it.
To all men reading this - open your mind and enjoy it.

Loved it!

I am a huge fan of Caitlin Moran. What she has to say is so relevant and hopeful. Her delivery is so funny at times and heartfelt at others. She is very inspirational and I am so hopeful that her book will bring about some positive change for everyone.

Disappointed

Was really enjoying this until the author chose to call out and belittle another writer, for almost an entire chapter. Deleted book from my device

For anyone with any male in their life.

A brilliant, funny, thought provoking book for the benefit of all the boys and men in our lives. Moran interviews and asks questions to loads of males with surprising insights, peppered with humour and her razor sharp wit.
An opportunity to walk in their shoes and for us all to hear from them. Be open to this book, written by a feminist who happens to enjoy the company of men.

Men and boys from a feminist perspective

I loved this book - listened to the whole thing in 4 days flat. It explores what it means to be a boy and a man from a feminist perspective, which I didn’t find judgemental. I hope that millennial men will read it to learn from previous generations and to understand that they can do things differently. I felt that the later chapters, exploring things like Jordan Peterson, Andrew Tate, medical situations and family more interesting than the early chapters looking at boyhood. As always, I greatly enjoyed Caitlin’s narration.
