About this listen
Weaponized is a thrilling far-future adventure by acclaimed science fiction author Neal Asher.
A bright new future for humanity—or a dark and inescapable past.
Ursula has lived twice the normal human lifespan, courtesy of the latest technology. But now she’s struggling to find excitement and purpose, so signs up to the Polity’s military. She excels in weapons development, and progresses rapidly up the ranks. But after botching a powerful new ammunition test, she’s dismissed from service.
Hunting for a simpler, more meaningful existence, the ex-soldier heads for the stars. And after founding a colony on the hostile planet of Threpsis, Ursula finally feels alive. Then deadly raptors attack and the colonists are forced to adapt in unprecedented ways. The raptors also raise a deeply troubling question: how could the Polity miss these apex predators? And alien ruins? Meanwhile, biophysicist Oren has formed his own survival plan—one he’ll pursue at any cost.
As a desperate battle erupts to consume the planet, Ursula finds she must dig deep into her past to ensure humanity’s future.

Brutal
Like a nightmare you can’t wake up from… though much more enjoyable:)
This novel fits nicely into Neal Asher’s universe.
Top job!

Anatomy lessons needed
Pretty good overall and as usual, action packed. A solid back story of the Polity that will lead to some sequels I'm sure. But please please check some anatomy texts to see where catheters go!

Good story, good narration
It took a little while to get into but then i couldn’t put it down (so to speak). Narrator does a good job of differentiating characters without going overboard.

Great story, superbly read
I enjoyed every second of this. Beautifully narrated, not overdone with accents, but clearly identified characters.
The story runs along with intermittent inserts for backstory.
No spoilers here but there has GOT to be a sequel!!!! You can’t leave it like that.
Come on Neal I hope there is more for this character.

Predictable, plodding, and patronising
Everything up until about the 17hr mark is predictable. If Asher had decided to develop the story in a linear fashion, the basic beats would have been obvious within the first couple of hours. That's not what happened. Asher decided to develop the story elements and main characters by way of constant flashback and incessant introspection. Taking time to make characters think about their feelings and life decisions for several minutes in the middle of a battle is a sure way to kill the tension that the author has been trying to build up.
Asher explains the concepts in his story as if they are mind bogglingly new concepts which the reader is too new to sci-fi and stupid to understand. Spoiler, they're not new by a long shot. They've been covered in other SF, and on YouTube channels like SFIA.
Disappointingly, the interesting ideas and action that should have been developed come in the final 3 hrs and are marred by the flashbacking and introspection.
Speaking of disappointment, Asher's favourite words/themes in this book are ennui and ersatz. Thanks Asher, I definitely have experienced ennui from listening to this ersatz story.
The narrator does a decent enough job. His dramatic style matches the pace of the book. One quirk is that he puts the stress of some words in the wrong place. Whether that is on purpose or not considering his training, is unclear.
