About this listen

The No.1 Sunday Times bestseller

IN THE FINAL RECKONING, CHOOSE YOUR SIDE CAREFULLY…

The epic conclusion to the globally bestselling historical series.

After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria. With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure – yet Uhtred is far from safe. Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages.

To the south, King Æthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia – and now eyes a bigger prize. To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion.

Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred. Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced. Only fate can decide the outcome.

The epic story of how England was made concludes in WAR LORD, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series.

One of the best

Loved this book and possibly one of the best in the series. I’m a bit gutted because I’ve enjoyed reading these over the years and it’s sad that this was the last book.

Thank you Bernard Cornwell for Uthred of Bebbenburg.

The end of the greatest of all stories ever told.

Once again Bernard Cornwell has acted the story of Uthred of Bebbenberg. The buildup, the battle, and the ending were fantastic. It would not be easy to keep the main characters battling so much due to age but it was great how it worked.

The descriptions of battle, characters, and environment make you easily able to picture every scene on very page.

It is the end of the whole series and I will read it all again for sure. Uthred will never be forgotten.

As a fan of the books I have been to the Bamberg Castle. It is a beautiful place and full of history. The height of the caste, the strong walls, and the view of the water make everything in these books feel real when you are there.

The wait was worth it

I counted days till this book was released. Matt Bates is a brilliant narrator. I wish it wasn't the last but all good things must come to an end. Big salute to Bernard Cornwell.

Spectacular

This enter series was spectacular. Having heard all the volumes in their entirety I will struggle to find another series that comes close to The Last Kingdom series. Magnificently written by Bernard Cornwell and magnificently read by Matt Bates . Thank you for the journey.

origins of England story

very dramatic historical fiction within the events of the founding of England. good battle narration and character buildup but requires geographical knowledge of England to understand the context of territorial disputes.

So sad

Very sad this saga has ended, listening to this narrator telling the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. A great deal of the attraction to this series has been the narration. Coming to a new book in the series is like returning to hear the voice of an old friend. I don’t know where Bernard Cornwell will go from here but hearing his epilogue makes me hopeful for a return to the North and a new Warlord.

Return to top form

After a few weaker efforts in the series Cornwall is back at top form with War Lord, with some of the best writing, pacing, character development and payoff in the whole story arc of Uhtred of Bamburgh. A ripper.
