Dem Kaiser Ferdinand II. gefällt dies nicht. Deshalb versucht er durch Abzug eines Teils seines Heeres Wallenstein zu schwächen. Das möchte der Fürst nicht hinnehmen und überlegt, das Kommando über sein Heer ganz aufzugeben und zu den Schweden zu wechseln. Seine Vertrauten Terzky und Illo raten ihm ebenfalls zu diesem Schritt. Einer seiner Vertrauten, Octavio Piccolomini, ist jedoch ein Spion des Kaisers und erfährt von den Verhandlungen mit den Schweden. Schließlich eskaliert die Situation und Wallenstein und seine Vertrauten werden ermordet.
