Inhalt: Auf dem Ritt nach Italien sucht Baron Fortunat seinen Kommilitonen Walter aus der alten Heidelberger Zeit auf und möchte ihn zu einer gemeinsamen Weiterreise ermutigen. Walter lehnt dies ab, da er mit der Amtmannstochter Florentine verlobt ist und diese baldmöglichst heiraten möchte. Auf Schloss Hohenstein lernt Fortunat am Tisch des Amtmanns den poetischen Studenten Otto, Neffe des Amtmanns, kennen. Er studiert Rechtswissenschaften, wie ihn anwidert, doch will er zunächst die Dichtkunst zurückstellen und das Examen bestehen. Walter und Fortunat verlassen Hohenstein. Walter muss zurück in sein Amt. Fortunat setzt seine Reise fort.
