About this listen

From the New York Times best-selling author of Enders Game comes a brand-new series following a teen who wakes up on an abandoned Earth to discover that he’s a clone!

Laz is a side-stepper: a teen with the incredible power to jump his consciousness to alternate versions of himself in parallel worlds. All his life, there was no mistake that a little side-stepping couldn’t fix.

Until Laz wakes up one day in a cloning facility on a seemingly abandoned Earth.

Laz finds himself surrounded by hundreds of other clones, all dead, and quickly realizes that he too must be a clone of his original self. Laz has no idea what happened to the world he remembers as vibrant and bustling only yesterday, and he struggles to survive in the barren wasteland he’s now trapped in. But the question that haunts him isn’t why was he created, but instead, who woke him up…and why?

There’s only a single bright spot in Laz’s new life: One other clone appears to still be alive, although she remains asleep. Deep down, Laz believes that this girl holds the key to the mysteries plaguing him, but if he wakes her up, she’ll be trapped in this hellscape with him.

This is one problem that Laz can’t just side-step his way out of.

Fun world building

I’m keen to see how this turns into a trilogy. A good quick sci-fi built around existence hopping and clone relationships to their originals.

Interesting but slow paced

I enjoyed the ideas in this story but some parts were pretty tedious. The early relationship development between the young ones and the dogs were the best parts. The narrator has a beautiful reading voice but sadly did a dreadful job of voicing the young female character. Seriously, it’s borderline offensive. I had to force myself to not quit because of it.

Pretty average

The concept was good, but the story could have been a lot more exciting. I kept waiting for the twist or something unexpected, but it never came. No where near as good as Enders Game.

Excellent book - really enjoyed it.

Great book and well paced, worth it on audible even though it’s not super long.

An interesting idea, with a somewhat unusual shape

An interesting premise, carried out well. There are several moments when characters remind themselves and each other of the "rules" of this conceit, though oddly when one person says them to another, the one being told always reacts like its the first time they've considered it. I don't want to give the impression that this book becomes boring, but I do feel like the pace is faster earlier on, and steadies out towards the end. No idea whether this book has a sequel yet, but there certainly seem to be unresolved issues (though I think only one that's likely to lead to a follow-up). Not what I expected from the brief blurb I'd read.

Interesting concept – great idea.

It took quite a while to get started and I’m not sure if the narrator was the right fit for the characters involved! But the story’s concept was fascinating and resolution – ingenious!
