Exciting start to this contemporary fantasy series
This was nothing like I expected after seeing the cover. I picked this up after seeing it was a SPFBO8 entrant.
I don't know if this would be classed as Contemporary or Urban Fantasy but it was a really fun and quick read and the wit was great!
Vulcan Rising was a pretty run of the mill fantasy once I realised it was UF fantasy, but that didn't make it overly predictable or diminish my enjoyment in any way.
I did struggle to click initially with a couple of Agatha's flashbacks but once I realised this is what they were it was easy enough to follow. I know some people have issues reading italics for any length of time but a time stamp or similar may have been helpful for some readers. I believe the author has since added this
The prophecy and chosen one Tropes are here as I love but the standout and uniqueness for me were the POVs of the parents. I love when parents are the main characters, being a parent myself and the relationship and couple banter in this was great.
For me, it was Joseph who carried this story. He was extremely relatable and realistic and could easily be the Veteran next door that you invite to have a BBQ with your families.
The narration by Skye Alley was great and I thoroughly enjoyed it as well
I do wish that this series had covers that expressed the awesomeness and the Blurb gave us a little more of the fantasy that is between its covers.
I hate that I am a shallow cover buyer, but it is the cover that grabs me and the Blurb that I purchase. If it wasn't for SPFBO this title wouldn't be on my radar which is a shame because it is a good story. I enjoyed it and want to know what happens next for these characters.
