About this listen
Two men battle the wilderness - and desire.
It's 1793, and Simon Cavendish needs to get to his station at Fort Charlotte, a fur-trading outpost in the untamed Canadian wild. The fort is only accessible by canoe, and there's just one man daring enough to take him on the perilous, thousand-mile journey from Montreal this late in the summer.
Young Christian Smith, the son of an Ojibwe mother and absent English father, is desperate for money to strike out on his own, so he agrees to take clueless Simon deep into the wild. As they travel endless lakes and rivers, they butt heads.
Yet the attraction between Simon and Christian, two men from vastly different worlds, grows ever stronger. Locked in a battle against the wilderness and elements, how long can they fight their desire for each other?
Contains mature themes.

A little too short for me to feel invested!
It’s 1793 and Simon Cavendish is keen to get to Fort Charlotte, a fur-trading outpost in northern Canada that he’ll be in charge of. Having just missed the bigger boats, Simon’s only course of action is paddle a two-person canoe with local indigenous guide Christian Smith. Christian sees Simon as pampered and expects him to turn back in the face of the gruelling trip but he grows to respect Simon’s tenacity and the two men are drawn to each other.
At only 66 pp (1 hr 36 on audio), this was a very brief read and seemed very similar to another of Keira’s works, Arctic Fire, which had more character development. I didn’t mind this but felt I didn’t have time to connect with the characters before the abruptly neat ending. Joel Leslie narrates the audio well (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).
