About this listen

With the end of the Second World War in sight, the Allies begin to divide up the spoils, and it proves to be a dangerous game. The British have become aware that the Soviet Union is intent on controlling Austria once the war ends.

Major Edgar is given the job of establishing an espionage unit in Vienna in order to track down Austria's most respected politician. But the feared Soviet spy Viktor Krasotkin is already embarking on exactly the same mission....

Hard hitting and absorbing

Definitely a book for the intelligent reader. Well researched, beautifully written, strong, believable plot. Alex Gerlis is right up there with the best of his genre. Congratulations to the author.

If I’m allowed a few minor (constructive) criticisms, I would say that a couple of his characters were under developed. His Gestapo police villain was a caricature and likewise his British Secret Service chiefs. His main heroine could have been fleshed out more so that we really cared more about her relationship with the hero. Possibly took a little long to get going.

But Gerlis really captured the feeling of WW2 Vienna and the atmosphere generated by the Soviet advance on that city was superb.

Great ending that really stayed with the reader. Strong five stars.
