Førhen var han kriger og ransmand. Nu har Bodja med sine fæller bosat sig ved en østjysk fjord, hvor skov bliver ryddet, og jord skal dyrkes. Landsbyen er vokset og hører ikke til de mindste. Alligevel mangler noget. De gamle guder har ligesom mistet deres kraft. I landsbyen vokser høvdingesønnen Bråthe op sammen med trællesønnen Regnar. Regnars kærlighed er pigen Blia, men han må nøjes med at se til, da hun bliver bortgiftet til den langt ældre, rige handelsmand Lothar Blenk. Nye tider kommer til landsbyen sammen med munken Anselm. Han prædiker hvide Krists ord om fred og kærlighed, og efter Bodjas død giver Bråthe ordre til, at der skal samles sten til en kirke.
