 L'Italia nel '700 è, come sappiamo, ancora divisa in stati e staterelli che si "barcamenano" per tutto il secolo per conservare quel bizzarro equilibrio politico che sarà sconvolto solo nella seconda metà dell'800. Ma il "bel paese" comincia ad attrarre i primi colti e curiosi intellettuali europei che vanno alla ricerca degli antichi splendori, delle bellezze e delle tracce storiche di quel che l'Italia fu nel passato. Sono i primi "turisti" che approfittano del Grand Tour anche per curiosare nelle campagne e nelle città italiane e descrivere le abitudini, i costumi, le virtù e i vizi degli abitanti.

Montesquieu, Addison, Goethe, fra gli altri, ci hanno lasciato importanti testimonianze del loro soggiorno e con occhi di "stranieri" tracciano schizzi colorati, a tratti comici ed ironici, della vita che si conduceva a Roma, a Milano, a Venezia, a Napoli, coi loro teatri, con i personaggi più acclamati del bel canto, con le "macchiette" tipicamente italiane che ancor oggi si ricordano come tipici stereotipi della penisola.
